The Gardener's Notepad
Royal Purple has extra deep purple/black foliage, and holds it's color quite well over Summer. Very showy, especially in bloom. There is a particularly impressive planting of purple Cotinus, possibly Royal Purple, at the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building. After seeing those, I began to wonder, with an element of panic, where I would transplant the one I had recently installed in the perimeter display garden. If I have the courage to follow through with the required pruning measures it will be ok where it lies... Plumes form on second year wood... I can't trim it aggressively and get flowers.... I hate these decisions!
