The Gardener's Notepad
There has been a tremendous amount of work on the Hydrangea genus in recent years, and countless cultivars have been released and heavily promoted as the best thing ever, to the point that when horticultural sales representatives starts waving their arms and shouting "We have a new Hydrangea!" most people are tempted to avoid eye contact are hurry on by. There's. Just. So. Many.
But 'Wedding Gown' is better than that. Every time I walk by I have to decide whether or not I take yet another picture of a flower or leaf. It has a more sturdy structure than most, with thick leaves that, from my experience, are less prone to wilting in high heat. Blooms on old and new wood, and several plants that froze almost completely to the ground had a fine set of flowers later that same year. The Spring of '16 was especially nasty for Hydrangea in that it warmed up enough that they all began to bud out only to get several nights in the low 20's later on, resulting in severe dieback. But 'Wedding Gown' still bloomed!
