The Gardener's Notepad
'Thunderhead' is quite nice, with long deep green needles tipped in white velvety candles. Size is very variable, and they are able to get significantly larger than stated. To date, I have not seen any, at least that I recognized, that were extra huge. They can grow nearly 12 inches in a single season if conditions are ideal. There is very little uniformity in growth structure from plant to plant. Each is unique. They definitely make a statement. Use as a specimen to maximize character, or in company with a tree that is strictly pyramidal or columnar so as not to detract from the special character they possess.
When hunting for definitive "mature" size specifications, and perusing the multitude of images that appear when searching for photo evidence, one can get seriously misled by the tremendous differences that various climates have on growth rates. And at times (quite often?) there are slight variations in cultivars of the same name from different sources.
