The Gardener's Notepad
Another Rhododendron that probably doesn't need an introduction due to it's popularity. Lavender flowers over dark gray-green leaves. Not unlike an Azalea in appearance when blooming. The leaves are quite fragrant when rubbed, a scent which some find objectionable, but those people don't know what they're talking about! Dislikes compacted soils, and will proceed to decline with haste if it is unhappy with where it is placed.
As a rule, when planting any member of the Rhododendron family in an area where no others are it is best to get a good idea of the soil quality and buy a bale of peat moss and some compost to amend the immediate square footage that the roots will be tapping into. A well prepared hole is the best indicator of gardening success. And that's a fact!
