The Gardener's Notepad
One of the more widespread US native trees, preferring damp locations. Very beautiful, especially at the water's edge. A most adaptable tree with a firm root system that can usually withstand hurricane force winds. The only objectionable characteristic? If planted in excessively wet soil, it's roots will surface, forming what is known as 'knees'. They need to be avoided by the lawn mower. However, if planted in a dryer location, they are not likely to surface. One of the finest growth habits of our native trees. Extra thick, buttressed trunk. Soft deciduous needles.
