The Gardener's Notepad

Somewhat of a departure for Clematis, at least in the historically cultivated varieties. It seems that the "dam" has broken, and since seeing this one offered there have been no less than 5 "NEW!" Clematis cultivars, and all were bush form. This one goes by it's trademark name 'Serious Black' in the US, and has done rather well for us in the nursery. One made it's way into a new flower bed and is under observation. I suspect I should have prepared the soil more than I did, as it is acting as if it is slightly displeased with me and will need some attention before Spring commences. I believe I will give some cow "fertilizer" and see what it thinks of me then. 'Serious Black' can be trimmed to ground level each winter or left to sprout from it's old branches, but it will look much cleaner if it is cut back. While most of the branches will retain life and will sprout, it begins to look messy if left alone.
