The Gardener's Notepad

Even though they are grown as a tree in milder climates, Crape Myrtles must be protected in our zone, away from harsh winter winds and below-freezing temperatures. Their upright growth habit makes it easy to trim, exposing multi-stemmed trunks that exfoliate with age to reveal mottled bark. Showy, crepe-papery flowers engulf the plant in late summer and well into fall. 'Tonto' is a hybrid that displays excellent resistance to mildew.
