The Gardener's Notepad
Elderberry is prized for it's extremely nutritious fruit, and 'York' was selected for it's bearing ability. They fruit best if pollinated by another variety of the same species, whether it be a cultivar or straight species. 'Adams' is usually the "go to" pollinator. You will want to cover your plants with netting if you want to have a chance to harvest anything worth writing home about. If you are convicted with feelings of selfishness about withholding fruit from hungry birds, you can plant a straight species variety out in the open, beside your covered cultivar planting, thus relieving your guilt and pollinating the ones you actually want. Mind that they do not get too dry, at least until the fruit is harvested. Native stands occur in moist areas.
